Tigerfest Returns June 4th 2011

TigerFest returns to festival – High school strength challenge added to pro wrestling show

Wrestling fans, the countdown is on.

Just over two weeks remain until the return of TigerFest, which — as part of the Milton Downtown Street Festival — attracted more than a thousand onlookers last year.

Put on by international wrestling legend Tiger Jeet Singh and his son Tiger Ali Singh, this year’s event — set for Saturday, June 4 across from Troy’s Diner on Main Street — promises to pack ’em in once again. But not just because of the squared circle action.

Local teens are sure to come out in droves to watch their peers take part in Tiger’s High School Challenge, which will see five-guy, five-girl teams from each of the three high schools test themselves in strongman style competition.

Along with bragging rights, the challenge — culminating with a giant tire flipping contest — will serve as a fundraiser for the schools.

TigerFest t-shirts, with personalized school colours, will be sold leading up to the event, with net proceeds being donated back to each of the schools by the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation.

The idea originated from Milton District’s request for assistance in its ongoing efforts to raise money for a new fitness room.

Set to begin around noon, the high school challenge kicks off a full slate of TigerFest activities, which continue with boxing and CrossFit demonstrations by Milton’s FirePower and performances by pop recording artist Prita Chhabra and Milton’s own soul singer/songwriter Khalel.

From there, the pro wrestling — which is scheduled to include former WWE stars Tatanka and Robbie McAllister and ex-TNA star Sonjay Dutt, as well as some notable names from the independent circuit — gets underway at 5 p.m.

Wrapping up with a wrestlers autograph session, the card won’t include a competitive showing by Tiger Jr. this time around, as an Achilles injury will keep him out of action.

However, an in-ring cameo role by the former WWE heel — who won last year’s card-ending battle royal — is a distinct possibility.

While the event is free, organizers are asking for a minimum donation of $5 for a spot in the provided seating area. Proceeds from this will go to the Milton Salvation Army.

In conjunction with this, Miltonians are asked to drop off non-perishable food items to local Scotiabank locations starting in mid-May in support of the food bank.

TigerFest t-shirts will also be sold during the day, with the money raised going to the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation in support of the Japan Relief Campaign, Halton Learning Foundation and McMaster Children’s Hospital.

Troys Toy Drive Huge Success

Even in the early hours of Monday morning you could feel the excitement.  I got to Troy’s Diner Best Western location shortly after 6AM to a full parking lot and over a hundred people running about.

City TV’s Breakfast Television was setting up their live feed as the toys were being put into the trailers for their journey to the Salvation Army, Sick Kids Hospital and Halton Womens Place to put smiles on childrens faces for Christmas morning.

They actually had to call in another trailer as the two they had in place were filled to the brim and almost overflowing.

Among the notables in attendance was Canada’s most famous hockey dad Walter Gretzky who worked the room non stop talking to kids of all ages, signing autographs and smiling for pictures.  This man has no ends to his energy and is truly a classy gentleman.  Johnny Bower was also running around to the delight of Leaf fans in the room.  Santa-Tiger Ali Singh could be seen signing autographs with his father Tiger Jeet Singh recounting their years in professional wrestling.

The tables were filled with silent auction items that ranged from signed merchandise by Walter and Johnny to Raptors Tickets and other great prizes.  Congratulations to Troy, his staff and all the volunteers that put countless hours of effort to make this drive the best yet.  I havent heard any official numbers but I do know last years total was blown away BIG TIME.  This event also wouldnt be what it is without the efforts and dedication of Tiger Jeet Singh and Tiger Ali Singh and their family.

Its heartwarming to know that there will be a few more smiles on kids faces this Christmas morning because of the generosity and love of all those involved.

Dont Forget Troy’s Toy Drive on December 20th

Troy has been hard at work collecting donations for the Toy Drive over the last several weeks.  If you walk into the downtown location of Troy’s Diner you will see examples of the generosity of Milton residents on display.

Recently Troy and TigerAli Singh were out buying over $10,000 in toys for the kids.  Thats simply amazing.

You can join Troy, the Tigers and many of us on December 20th at the Best Western location of Troy’s Diner where Breakfast Television will be brodcasting live.  The list of special guests continues to grow and as soon as I have confirmation, I’ll announce them here.

Milton Santa Claus Parade 2010

It was a little chilly but still an entertaining day on Main Street in Milton.  Thousands of people despite the cold wind and the snow earlier on in the day made their way to downtown Milton for its annual Santa Claus Parade.  Over 50 floats made their way down Main Street to sing songs, dance, and promote a wonderful family oriented holiday season.

MiltonToday TV was there live online … I didn’t get a chance to go over and say HI but they apparently did a very good job broadcasting the parade online.  I’ll have to go check them out.  From where we were (in front of Knox Presp. Church) you could see the MiltonToday HQ.  Milton’s parade gets better and better as the years go on and this one didnt disappoint.  Mrs. Claus apparently needed some extra time to get her make up ready according to one of the parade marshals Colin Best but it took only about 2 hours for the parade be completed.

Troy’s Diner had an amazing float and a collection of dancers that knocked the socks off of a lot of people along the parade route.  Speaking with Tiger Ali Singh at Troy’s later this evening, he said next year was going to be bigger … and better.  “TIGER STYLE” as he put it.  You know its going to be big!

The Shriners as always did an amazing job.  Anthony now wants to see if he can ride those motorized scooters around soon.  Im almost afraid of what he would do in one of those.  The dancers from all the different groups looked cold but were still going strong at the half way point in the parade.  The parade was full of energy and shouts of “MERRY CHRISTMAS” can be heard all over the route.

Troy’s Toy Drive

We spent Saturday morning walking up and down Main Street in Milton for their 2nd annual Tots on Parade Halloween Party for kids.  Hundreds of the little ones lined the streets in the day light to get treats from store owners courtesy of the Milton DBIA.  It was a fun time and the kids left with bags full of candy and smiles across their face.  It almost felt like Christmas.

For those who know me well, I normally don’t get into the Christmas spirit until much later in the year, much to the shagrin of my wife (who would put up decorations NOW if she had the chance) but this year is a bit different.  While shopping later on with the family, my trusty phone started buzzing away.  It was a message from Troy Newton of Troy’s Diner in Milton.  When Troy calls … you answer!

Troy is now planning this years Troy’s Toy Drive scheduled for December 20, 2010 at his location at Best Western Milton (401 and 25) and this year looks to top last years monumental success.  Each year during this campaign, they raise close to $30,000 in toys for the Salvation Army, Sick Kids Hospital and Halton Women’s Place and Troy wants to beat that number … BIG TIME.

You know an event like this will bring out big time names in our community and there are two no bigger names than Tiger Jeet Singh and Tiger Ali Singh.  You’ll remember the Tigers as just this past summer they put on the first of many Tigerfest live wrestling action during the Downtown Milton Street festival raising over $35,000 for the Milton District Hospital.  Last year the most famous hockey dad in the world (and a guy with the biggest heart in the world) Walter Gretzky was there, and this year it looks like there will be lots of famous names helping out that day and I have the flyer up at the bottom of this post.

If you want to send a donation, make it payable to “Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation, c/o Troy’s Toy Drive”and drop it off and either of the Diners locations on or before the 18th of December.  Breakfast Television will once again make it out to cover this event on the 20th with Jennifer Valentyne hosting the live eye coverage.

Let’s help show the world that Milton is the best place in the world and support Troy’s Toy Drive on December 20th, head on down to the Best Western location from 6AM to 12PM and maybe YOU can be on TV.
