Remembrance Day Ceremonies 2014

Remembrance Day is approaching and the Poppy Campaign is now in full gear.  If you see a Legion member or Cadet or one of the many volunteers out at the mall or while shopping for groceries, please take a moment to make a donation and say “Thank You” to a veteran.

There are a number of events coming up in Milton to pay your respects and take part in the ceremonies for Remembrance Day.

Sunday November 9th

Parade of Veterans begins at 1:30 pm from Branch 136 (21 Charles Street, Milton ON) where it will end at the cenotaph at Victoria Park beside Milton Town Hall.  Afterwards the parade will make its way down towards the Legion HQ where members of the public can come to the Legion Hall.

Tuesday November 11th

At 11AM on the 11th day of the 11th month please join us and Milton Branch 136 veterans & members as we celebrate Remembrance Day at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Lest We Forget!

Some Observations As Term of Council Ends

cropped-cropped-IMG_0000008712.pngLast night we had our last Administration and Planning Committee meeting for this term of Milton Town Council.

It’s been a pleasure to serve on that committee for the last four years along with the chair Colin Best.

It did strike me as odd that with the election just over 30 days away that there were very few candidates for Milton Town Council in attendance. Over the last few months, the public gallery has had a number of candidates for positions attend on a regular basis.  It brings me back to the last election campaign for me, when from early January to the last meeting I attended each one.

The best piece of advice I received when I first thought of running for public office was to attend the meetings and see how the process works.  It will give you a better understanding about the job, what it entails and the demands it will have on your time.  After I started attending regularly back in 2010, many other candidates showed up as well.  The ratio of those who won vs who didn’t is actually pretty good.

It’s because they were able to speak to voters with the understanding of what a local councillor does and that goes a long way.  They were able to make promises to voters as to what they could or could not do.  Knowing about the job is important for everyone who puts their name on a ballot.

Over this last year there have been a few candidates who attended regularly which is good.  Some however have not.

Out of the candidates who are vying for the position of Local and Regional councillor for wards 1,6,7 & 8, aside from one who attended less than a handful of meetings, no one has shown up.  Even the former councillor who was ousted from office back in December (see the link here and here)  and who made promises to attend meetings has not once shown his face at a meeting.

Some will claim “I watched the meetings online”  If you want the job, you make the effort to attend and take part in the conversation.  There should be no excuse at all for not wanting to be prepared for the job you’re spending money on trying to get.

None of the candidates for the position I’m running for have spoken on ANY issues they claim is important to them.  When it comes to town input sessions on budgets, community services, infrastructure or parks that both myself and the town have hosted…Nothing.

For over the last year I have attended the Regional Council meetings to prepare myself and be ready to start working day one. None of my opponents have.

Their lack of attendance should speak volumes to voters this coming election. Where have you been all this time?

The choice is clear for voters in wards 1,6,7,8. Mike Cluett is ready to start working Day one.

I’ll see you at the doors.

Louis St Laurent Road Widening

LSL Road Paving from 25 to Bronte Street

For those residents who use Louis St Laurent between 25 and Bronte St you will see that the paving has begun to widen the lanes.

The Town is also looking forward to completing the construction of the overpass on LSL to go towards Tremaine Road as well later this summer/fall.

Looking forward for other Town and Region projects to be completed this year.  The winter did put many projects behind schedule with the extreme cold temperatures but everything is getting back on track.

Here is a link to more road paving projects from the Town of Milton.

We appreciate your patience.

I’ll see you at the doors.

Update on Road Conditions in Milton

Over the past few days I have received a number of calls and emails about the road conditions in Milton due to the cold snap “Polar vortex” we have been experiencing.

Town of Milton staff have been working very hard to get the roads as clear as possible for traffic and in our neighbourhoods and we all appreciate your patience in this matter.

Here is a quick update we have received from our engineering staff:

Mayor and Members of Council,

Our efforts to keep all roads in a usable and safe state have been generally successful however, not to the normal visual standard everyone is used to at this point in time following the end of the precipitation event.

Salt stops being effective as an ice melter at approximately minus 10 degrees C. Air and pavement temperatures have remained consistently below minus 10 C since the flash freeze that occurred Sunday night.  This flash freeze was preceded by heavy rain, which prevented the pre-storm application of anti-icing liquid which would have stopped the ice from bonding to the asphalt surface of the roadways.  We are still working on removing this stubborn ice layer,  which is more of a nuisance while driving over it due to its rough nature, than a hazard as it does exhibit some degree of friction.  In addition to various snow removal operations, we had graders out last night working on the arterial, collector and Regional roads where this ice layer exists in an attempt to improve their condition prior to the morning rush hour. Winds causing blowing snow and streamers have also been a major factor during this time period that  the crews have had to deal with.

Temperatures are expected to rise in the next few days, starting today, with winds subsiding and prevalent sunshine, which will help alleviate the situation and aid our efforts.  We continue to ask that citizens drive with care and thank them for their understanding and cooperation as we continue to provide winter control services to the community.

According to the forecast, we should be heading into a period of “warmer” weather towards the weekend with temperatures in the plus range, which will go a long way to getting rid of the ice packs at the end of our driveways and improving the quality of the roads.  If there are any specific concerns you might have about the past few days and snow clearing, please feel free to email myself or engineering@milton.ca

I think we can all say that we are all looking forward to warmer weather coming up to give us a break from this cold, arctic weather. Thank you again for your patience.
