Friendly Wager

Over the last few weeks both myself and Oakville Councillor for Ward 2 Pam Damoff have been engaged in a friendly CFL rivalry.  Pam is a die hard fan of the Toronto Argonauts while yours truly is a strong supporter of the Hamilton TigerCats.

Our discussions of CFL football have been documented on Twitter (www.twitter.com/PamDamoff) and our passion for our teams have lead to a friendly wager for an upcoming game between the Argos and the Ticats on Oct 1st in Toronto.

If the Argos defeat my Cats on October 1st (yes, I chuckled a bit when I said that too) I will make a donation to a charity of her choice which is the Run for the Cure Life on the Line (Twitter @LOTL_65).

Life on the Line is a nonprofit initiative supporting CBCF founded by Taylor Robertson, a pro football player who lost his mother to breast cancer when he was 7 years old. http://www.lifeontheline.ca .

Now when Hamilton Tigercats help send the Argos to the basement of the CFL East, she will make a donation to the United Way Milton (www.miltonunitedway.ca) campaign.  The amount is small, only $20 but its a friendly wager indeed.

You can get involved in this as well by joining our wager and you can show your support for BOTH of our charities or if you’d like to let people know you feel the TigerCats or Argos will win on Oct 1st.  I think this would be a great way to support both charities and I urge everyone to make a donation to both and a way for the people from Oakville & Milton to take part.

Both are great choices to support and I urge that you do support the Run for the Cure AND the United Way of Milton.

If you would like to donate to Pam’s Run for the Cure here is the link.  If you would like to make a donation to the United Way of Milton heres the link.

Drop me a line mike@mikecluett.ca or comment on this blog to let us know who you’ll be rooting for on Oct 1st.

Halton Regional police are turning to the public to help locate a missing 13-year-old girl last seen by her family Aug. 25.

Police said they believe Ansharina De Vera may have left her home of her own free will after a “minor discipline issue.”

She was last seen in her Ferguson Drive home in Milton around 11:35 p.m. Thursday before going to sleep.

De Vera was gone when the family awoke Friday morning, police said.

An “extensive investigation” has not been successful.

De Vera is described as five-foot-one, 99 pounds, with long black, hair streaked with auburn, brown eyes, pierced ears and a small, faded scar on the right side of her nose.

Outside of Milton, the girl is known to enjoy Canada’s Wonderland, Niagara Falls and the CN Tower. She also frequents the area of Hurontario and Dundas streets in Mississauga, where she used to live.

Anyone with information is asked to contact 905-825-4747 ext. 2410.

Louis St Laurent & Thompson Road

The intersection of Louis St Laurent and Thompson Road now has the hardware installed for the all way lights as of today.  Its a few days behind schedule but I have been assured by our engineering department that the lights will be energized shortly after its complete and the 4 way stop signs will be removed.

Since this project has been announced, there have been a number of ward 6 and 7 residents who have emailed me asking for updates and “whats going on” over the past several weeks and many of you have credited this blog and other postings on forums around town with providing information to them.  Thanks for those comments as they are very much appreciated.  It goes to show that if council members use this technology like our website, Twitter and Facebook posts, residents in the area can be informed and it takes away from the “What the Heck” factor from people as changes continue to happen in and around Milton.

Thanks again for the continued input into this site and I appreciate all the feedback I get.

Milton Hospital Expansion Approved!

Its been a busy day for a number of reasons. I was at the announcement today along with several of our town councillors, MPP Ted Chudleigh, Liberal candidates Indiria Naidoo Harris, Friends of Milton Hospital, doctors and nurses, and staff and volunteers. Quite emotional. I had to leave because we had a medical emergency with our cat Chester. He was in a fight on the weekend and developed a massive infection which burst today and my son called in a panic. (Chesters had his surgery and is doing ok, we’ll be picking him up soon)

I put together a few thoughts, and once things settle down at home, I’ll post more…and probably add more people to thank so I dont leave anyone out.

EDIT:  As Colin Best reminded me on the Hawthorne Villager I forgot someone important.  Regional Chair Gary Carr has also played a very strong role in getting meetings scheduled with cabinet ministers during the recent AMO Conference in London and also bringing up Milton’s needs at every possible opportunity.  Thank you Gary!!!

Here is the video from today courtesy of Brian Best (thanks for the vid…it was a historic day in Milton and I’m glad it was captured)

Today was a great day for Milton with the announcement of the hospital expansion earlier today. Many thanks to a LOT of people.

To the doctors and nurses and volunteers and staff of Milton Hospital…thank you. You were the ones under the gun over the last several years and despite everything seemingly against you, you have ALL done an amazing job.

The tears of joy I witnessed from the staff at MDH said it all.

To John Oliver and Alan Halls THANK YOU for your leadership and persistence in this matter. Everyone at Halton Healthcare Services has been a strong advocate for Milton and our needs and you have lead the charge.

To Friends of Milton Hospital, THANK YOU. Over 36,000 signatures were collected and presented to the government to let them know, THIS was the issue in town.

To my fellow council members, THANK YOU. Everytime we had the ear of a provincial minister of govt, we brought the Milton Hospital expansion to their attention. Theres a reason why Minister Deb Matthews mentioned our persistence.

To my colleagues on the Grow Milton Hospital campaign, THANK YOU! We helped in keeping the pressure up and we saw the end result in mind. Todays announcement was a result of a lot of people and the residents of Milton…THANK YOU.

There is also MPP Ted Chudleigh to thank for his years of work on this with the provincial government. John Oliver made mention in his speech of Ted’s efforts on raising awareness over the last several years, and while colourful at times, his passion for Halton residents in Milton was unwaivering. THANK YOU Ted!

Now the hard work begins. We WILL do this together and with everyones support from all sides … the job will get done.
