Lawn Signs Will Be Ready Soon

I have been getting a number of emails recently from people who are looking for lawn signs.  As a candidate I find this very encouraging because it means people are engaged and interested in what is going on.

As I talked about yesterday, town council tonight will be considering a report from staff that recommends a potential, stress potential, increase in the mil rate by 6.91% for the 2011 budget year.

Nothing is written in stone as that decision is made (by the new council) in the December budget meetings.  This is a time where council makes comments and asks for further information and to give staff direction on where they would like it go.

Needless to say tonight’s council meeting should go long with the majority of council members now registered to run in the election.  I hope to hear so positive comments tonight and maybe we can hear from council that 6.91% increase is unacceptable.  There are some questions on how they arrived at this number and staff will also be making a presentation tonight.

Stay tuned to my Twitter for updates.  If you haven’t been following yet, click on my Twitter feed on my home page and send me messages on how the night progresses.

I know staff is looking at the costs involved in streaming the meetings online through www.milton.ca and this is one of those meetings I know would get a lot of interest from taxpayers.  If you can make it, bring a lunch and head down to Town Hall.  The meeting starts at 7:30pm.

If you would like to be put on the list for a lawn sign, email me mike@mikecluett.ca or leave a comment in this post and when they are ready, I’ll have one put on your front lawn.

Thank you very much for your support!  Until then, I’ll see you at the doors.

Whirlwind 24 hours

To say the last 24 hours in the life of Mike Cluett was busy, would be a big stretch.

In between my full time job at Greenlawn Canada, there have been a whirlwind number of phone calls to media outlets in the Greater Milton …er Toronto Area talking about a little thing known as moving the Tiger Cats to Milton, I havent been able to do much else.  I have been able to get to most of them, but not all, so as long as the discussion is going I’m available to talk.

I have received a lot of responses on this blog, through email, Twitter and on Facebook from both sides (mostly positive and encouraging responses) from people both inside and outside Milton.

As I mentioned earlier on I had been interviewed by CHCH News from Hamilton about this movement that was shown on the news at 6pm, 11pm and even on CHCH Morning Live along with Mayor Gord Krantz explaining the rationale of TiCats owner Bob Young considering Milton as an option.

If all else fails in Hamilton (that is still up for debate and not over by a long shot) we hope that the ownership of the CFL franchise can see the potential benefits of moving their team here to Milton.  Nothing regarding numbers, costs, business plans have been formally discussed but we wanted to get the discussion going.  Earlier this week I had read the letter Bob Young sent to Hamilton City Council about backing out of discussions for the Pan Am stadium and playing out the remaining years at Ivor Wynne before choosing another locale.

Being a TiCats fan, I want them to stay in Hamilton.  Thats my preferred choice and I hope between all the parties involved they can come to some sort of resolution in the matter and keep the team in Steel Town.  Baring all of that, we want them to know theres a potential home for them in Milton.

So the debate will continue for the next while and I hope that some see the potential benefits to Milton and the surrounding area by getting this put together.  There is no chance this will come to a resolution anytime soon, but we can only hope.

Locally, there was an article in today’s Champion talking about municipal candidates taking to the Internet to reach voters, spark discussion on issues and keeping people informed.  You can view that article by Christina Commisso (herself on Twitter) here.

I’ll keep everybody posted on whats going on with the Cats, how the reaction is coming in and what might happen in the future.  To those people visiting my blog and website for the first time, thanks for coming…I hope you stick around.

Until then, I’ll see you at the doors.

Cluett to try once more in Ward 6

Published on Jan 21, 2010

A Milton man who came close to securing a seat on council in the last municipal election is hoping the second time’s a charm.

Mike Cluett, who was only 93 votes shy of unseating long-time Councillor Brian Penman in 2006, has filed to run for councillor in the newly-created Ward 6 this fall.

The local blogger said he’s throwing his hat back in the ring because he feels town council needs to refocus its priorities.

“I think the Town is spending a lot of money without focusing on infrastructure and roads,” he said. “There seems to be a disconnect when it comes to issues relating to the growth in town and the concerns of the population.”

Cluett, a father of two and a sales consultant for a payment processing company, has lived in Milton since 2003.

He served on Milton’s 150th anniversary committee and has also been active in the community by working with residents on safety issues like residential speeding, parking and stop signs.

Ward 6 is framed by Derry, Thompson and Britannia roads and Fourth Line.
