Steam Era Returns Labour Day Weekend

Many people think that the CNE getting ready to close down is the official sign of the end of summer.  For those of us in Milton, its the Steam Era!

Starting this coming weekend is the 53rd edition of the Steam Era at Milton Fairgrounds.  According to the Steam Era website, their goal is “to advance knowledge, appreciation, and  interest in rural antiques and  our rural agricultural heritage. This is accomplished through the preservation, restoration and renovation of articles, vehicles,  machinery and power equipment of antiquity.”

The Steam Era is an “annual show held by the Ontario Steam and Antique Preservers Association  each year. At the Labour Day weekend show our members exhibit and demonstrate their equipment, models, cars and trucks, along with  craft and other displays for the public.”

So if you’re looking for something interesting to do over the long weekend in Milton, head on down to the fairgrounds and see history come alive in front of you.

Friday afternoon starting at 1pm there is the annual steam era parade through town and its not to be missed.  With all the whistles going off, it would be hard to miss it.  Later on Friday night at 6pm is the corn roast and movie night.

On Saturday there are a number of competitions from the tractor pull to log sawing (which is much more difficult that you would think) followed by more steam games, live entertainment and a talent contest.

More games are slated for Sunday along with mini tractor pulls and on Monday it wraps up with more competitions and the Steam Era Skills competition.  The full schedule of events can be found here.

Come and take part in Milton’s rich agricultural history this long weekend at Milton’s Steam Era and the real unofficial end of summer.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Derry Road Underpass Construction Starts MONDAY June 17th

Attention residents in wards 7 & 8

The long awaited construction of the Derry Road underpass between Scott and Bronte Street will begin MONDAY JUNE 17th.  There will be some headaches along the way but this is a project that should have been done years ago before all the growth on the west side of Milton began.  There are and were a number of potential safety issues with fire and ambulance potentially being caught in traffic and when completed that issue wont be around anymore.

We ask for your patience during this time and its slated to be completed in late 2014.  Heres the article from the Milton Canadian Champion.

Derry Road underpass construction begins Monday

Construction of the new four-lane underpass will include new on-road bike lanes and a multi-use pathway. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2014.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and use caution when traveling through the area. A map of the affected roadway and project updates can be found on Halton Region’s website at www.halton.ca/construction

Background Information

The Town undertakes a review of its Trails Master Plan every five years.  In December 2012, the Town of Milton retained MMM Group to develop a Trails and Cycling Master Plan Update. The revised Master Plan will build upon the Town’s existing system of roads and trails, as well as consider those planned in and surrounding Milton. The recreational and commuter/utilitarian needs of the pedestrians, cyclists and trail users who enjoy this network will be studied. The work completed for this Master Plan will provide recommendations and strategic priorities for the Town to consider that aim to increase the connectivity within its trail and cycling network.

The overall goal of the study is to generate a Trails and Cycling Master Plan Update which directs the planning, construction, maintenance and communication of the Town’s trail and cycling network for the next five years.  Its objectives include:

  • Reflect the changes in community planning and growth occurring in Milton and its surrounding communities since the last study
  • Develop a Town guide to implement a well-planned system of on-road and off-road routes for pedestrians, cyclists and trail users
  • Develop a network of trails and cycling routes that address the needs of recreational and commuter/utilitarian users
  • Develop a network of connections within the Town, including its rural and urban areas, to key destinations (community interest, employment, retail)
  • Provide the Town with recommendations regarding trail design, materials, routes, signage and maintenance
  • Provide innovative recommendations to promote the use of trails and cycling routes in Milton, for existing and future enthusiasts

The study limit is the entire boundary of the Town of Milton, which includes the hamlets of Brookville, Campbellville and Moffat.

Road Closure Tremaine to Dymott Avenue

Attention residents in Ward 8.

From the Region of Halton Website

Starting in February 2013, Halton Region will be installing a 400 mm watermain on Tremaine Road from Britannia Road to Dymott Avenue. The new watermain will ensure the safe delivery of water to existing and new communities in the Town of Milton.

To complete this infrastructure improvement safely and efficiently, Tremaine Road will be closed from Britannia Road to Dymott Avenue starting February 25, 2013. During the closure, northbound and southbound traffic will be redirected to Bronte Street. Local access will be maintained at all times for residents of Tremaine Road who live within the limits of the road closure. The planned reopening date is April 20, 2013.

Road closures are only undertaken when absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of motorists and construction workers. The watermain construction will be completed as quickly as possible to lessen the inconvenience to local residents and commuters.
The watermain construction work will be completed by Tedescon Infrastructure Ltd. and is expected to be finished by May 2013. Project updates can be found at www.halton.ca/construction.

Utilities such as Union Gas, Hydro and Bell Canada have already started to locate and mark out their existing infrastructure to prepare for this construction. Please do not remove these marker stakes or paint markings until the project is finished.

Project-related Information and Recommendations:

  • Truck Traffic – At times you will notice increased truck traffic in the construction area.  Please be aware and use extra caution while driving.
  • Noise and Vibration – You may experience some noise and slight vibration due to the work being done. As a precaution, we recommend that you remove small, light objects from shelving and walls. Any noise from the construction will be scheduled in accordance with local noise by-laws.

This project is part of Building a Better Halton, the Region’s infrastructure construction plan for roads, water, wastewater, and waste management projects across Halton Region. For more information on these projects or the Building a Better Halton plan, visit our website at www.halton.ca/construction.
