Milton resident Mike Cluett was handily elected Local and Regional Councillor for Wards 1, 6, 7 and 8 tonight.
Cluett, who was first elected to town council’s Ward 6 in 2010, said he was thrilled by the vote of confidence in him.
He celebrated the victory at Shoeless Joe’s where his wife of 15 years was also celebrating her birthday. Cluett added tonight’s victory was a triple celebration since the couple also marked their 15th anniversary in September during the heart of the election campaign.
The Ward 6 councillor announced he was seeking the regional councillor position when 2014 was first ushered in. He filed on January 2.
“This says that hard work and communication with residents is important,” Cluett said of the clear victory.
Cluett took 3,391 votes, while former ousted town councillor Tony Lambert came second with 1,799, followed by Mian Abubaqr, 1,681 and Kristen Collver with 1,026. Figures weren’t official at press time.
“Residents want a vision and they want to make sure that someone represents them,” he added.
Cluett said he’s been attending regional council meetings since early in his term to remain up-to-date on what’s happening.
Cluett is also on the board of the United Way of Milton and the Milton Community Resource Centre.
“The hard part begins now to help grow Milton the way residents want it,” said Cluett. “They want to grow with more balance, with job opportunities as opposed to just residential growth.
“People want to live and work in town then there’s more of a connection to Milton and it won’t be that bedroom community people say it is.”
